As part of the redevelopment of an area close to the River Swale to accommodate a small housing development, Solstice undertook evaluation trenching. The remains of medieval rubbish pits were identified in the ‘back lots’ of the original medieval properties that would have faced the road. The discoveries allowed for the negotiation of a targeted and proportionate excavation to make sure all remains were recorded in advance of the development starting.
