Our Farm Heritage is one of the strands of the Upper Nidderdale Landscape Partnership. It has been based on extensive volunteer-led survey of farm holdings across Upper Nidderdale, identifying hundreds of previously unrecorded archaeological features. As part of this, Solstice have run on-site training sessions in landscape survey and classroom sessions on using open-source GIS for archaeology.
Following survey work, Solstice have led volunteer excavations on five separate presumed prehistoric sites in partnership with the the UNLP and Iron Age (Nidderdale) – a local archaeology group. These excavations have cast significant new light on our understanding of how ‘native’ people lived and farmed in the northern uplands. The exciting results of these investigations have now been published and can be downloaded below.
